Pressure-Sensing Insoles May Help Patients with Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy

If you have diabetic peripheral neuropathy, you probably already know that one of the condition's biggest threats to health and well-being is foot ulcers. Caused by diabetic peripheral neuropathy and complications of the vascular system due to diabetes, ulcers form because diabetic patients often lose feeling in their feet, meaning they don't feel injuries that could become infected and cause the amputation of the foot.

But a new study claims that diabetic peripheral neuropathy sufferers could benefit from something as simple as wearing special insoles in their shoes. They're called pressure-sensing insoles, and they help diabetic peripheral neuropathy patients sense and feel injury to the feet. It may seem odd that someone would want to feel an injury, but as Dr. Nathan Weller explains, the difference between pain and no pain can often be the difference between amputation and no amputation.

"The rate of diabetics with peripheral neuropathy who get ulcers is staggeringly high," says Weller. "We're talking 25 percent of all diabetics, and those who get them once have a 65 percent chance of getting more."

The good news is that the pressure-sensing insoles used in the study showed a 71 percent reduction in the recurrence of ulcers, a number that was previously unheard of. The insoles work by creating eight pressure points around the foot that help alert the patient that something is wrong - like a rock in their shoe, or worse.

"This is huge news for patients who want a low-intervention, natural treatment for their peripheral neuropathy symptoms. With these insoles, patients can feel sensation - something they often cannot do with peripheral neuropathy," says Weller. "It's going to save a lot of feet from amputation."
