All About Idiopathic Peripheral Neuropathy

Idiopathic peripheral neuropathy is the least common form of peripheral neuropathy, but it can often be the most frustrating. That's because idiopathic peripheral neuropathy has no known cause, so patients with this illness could literally experience the pain out of nowhere - and never get an explanation. In fact, the name idiopathic means "of unknown cause."

Idiopathic peripheral neuropathy is most common in people over the age of 60 but can appear in younger people as well. Unfortunately, because it has no known cause, idiopathic peripheral neuropathy is impossible to prevent. Typically, patients with this illness will notice symptoms progressing very slowly at first, or symptoms will come on full force and stop. Either way, the symptoms are often a shock and can present a very big adjustment for those affected.

Patients with idiopathic peripheral neuropathy experience the same symptoms as persons with other forms of peripheral neuropathy: numbness and tingling in the limbs, hands and feet; muscle weakness; unsteadiness; and faintness. Treatment options for idiopathic peripheral neuropathy are the same as other forms of peripheral neuropathy, too - namely over-the-counter or prescription pain medicine and possibly the use of specially designed shoes that help relieve neuropathy pain.
